Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s leading ports group, recently took part in the #PositivelyPurple global movement in honour of the UN’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Since 2020, the company has supported the initiative every year by lighting up buildings across its 21 port locations, to help celebrate the contribution of employees with disabilities make to economies around the world. This year, ABP lit up five locations, including Plymouth Port Office, Cardiff Queen Alexandra House, Barrow Port Office, Ipswich Old Custom House and Southampton Horizon Cruise Terminal.
Alison Rumsey, ABP Chief HR Officer, commented: “We are pleased to be able to show ABP’s support again for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by lighting up some of the iconic building in our ports.
“We’ve made some great progress on creating a more inclusive workplace, including reviewing our recruitment and other HR practices to ensure they remain as inclusive as possible. and supporting our employee networks.
“Our employee-led diversity networks, of which ‘Ability’ is a leading one, have continued to raise awareness of disability-related issues within the organisation, whilst creating a safe forum where colleagues can raise issues affecting them at work.”
This is just one of a number of initiatives, ABP has championed throughout the year to support colleagues with disabilities. Other campaigns include participation in Invisible Disabilities Week in October, as part of which ABP ran a webinar providing colleagues with an introduction to neurodiversity.

It is a great way to share ideas with colleagues around how we can work together to create a more inclusive and welcoming work environment. I particularly enjoy how we get the chance to plan campaigns to build understanding of different topics, including neurodiversity".
By celebrating this day, and implementing meaningful initiatives, ABP demonstrates its unwavering commitment to supporting employees of all abilities and creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.
