Development of a 12.6-acre site at the Port of Garston will capitalise on the location’s transport connections and the strength of the Liverpool workforce to generate new jobs and deliver environmental benefits.
The site is owned by the UK’s leading ports group, Associated British Ports. The site lies next to Garston Way and the Knowsley Expressway which links to the M57 and M62 and is in close proximity to manufacturing clusters as well as proposed green energy infrastructure. It is an area already popular for distribution centre use and offers expansive development opportunities.
Helen Thomas, ABP Head of Property, Wales and Short Sea Ports, commented: “Many businesses are realising the environmental benefits of locating at a port because it can cut out some of the ‘product miles’ usually entailed by the manufacturing and distribution chain. Being able to unify these processes can bring real environmental benefits and improve a business’s ESG credentials.
Located on the north bank of the Mersey, ABP’s Port of Garston currently handles around 500,000 tonnes of cargo annually and specialises in a wide array of cargo from dry bulks to steel products.
The strength and diversity of the Liverpool workforce is seen as being a major positive for businesses looking to locate at Garston. With more than 40,000 active business enterprises across Merseyside, the proportion of the workforce which is involved in manufacturing is almost double the national average.
“We believe this strength will give incoming businesses confidence that they can access the workforce they need. This is a major factor currently in the distribution and manufacturing sectors,” added Helen Thomas.
The site can accommodate a total of more than 130,000 sq ft of space with the ability to sub-divide to suit individual occupier requirements from 20,000-60,000 sq ft.
Cushman & Wakefield and CBRE are advising ABP on the opportunities provided by the Garston site.
