A container service at ABP Hams Hall

ABP Hams Hall, the UK’s busiest inland rail freight terminal, has begun a new service with the award-winning rail freight company, Freightliner, to handle 60 containers per day for Containerships – the European Short Sea specialist part of the CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics. This new rail freight service between Liverpool and Birmingham removes approximately 4,800 lorry miles per day, which corresponds to a reduction of over 12,500 kg of carbon emissions every day.

As the UK’s largest rail-connected ports group, with 16 of its 21 ports connected to the national rail network, ABP has a UK-wide reach, capable of handling every conceivable type of cargo, and Hams Hall is at the heart of the group, handling over 120,000 TEUs every year.

Located eight miles outside Birmingham, Ham Hall is situated adjacent to the Nuneaton-to-Birmingham railway line and handles deep-sea and short-sea traffic to and from ports, such as Southampton, Tilbury, and Felixstowe, as well as traffic from and to the Channel Tunnel and Scotland.

ABP’s Lee Armstrong, Head of Commercial Development (Rail) said,

“With this new service, it is encouraging to see the increasing interest in our terminal at Hams Hall and the use of rail freight overall, particularly as a useful solution to reducing carbon emissions by removing lorry miles.”
