Today, Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s leading and best-connected port operator, has opened applications for its popular Graduate Training Programme, which is looking to attract the brightest new talent to join the maritime and logistics sector.

Starting in 2020, our two-year Graduate Training Programme is designed to give Graduates a 360-degree view of the company, providing them with the skills and experience needed to become a future leader.

"I would highly advise any graduates completing their degree in the summer, who have an interest in business roles, to consider applying for the ABP Graduate Programme." Jozef Ochwat Port Management Graduate, Humber International Terminal (Immingham)

"My experiences in my short time with the company have been nothing but positive, with colleagues taking every opportunity to help my development and ensure I’m getting the best possible support to develop my career."

ABP is recruiting for seven roles, in a wide range of disciplines including Port Management, Property, Commercial and Project Management as well as Hydrographic Surveying.

Successful candidates will be given a fantastic range of development opportunities, such as general and project management, health and safety, understanding of the maritime industry and ports sector, all combined with an opportunity to develop broad leadership skills including communication, problem solving, customer service and stakeholder management skills throughout the duration of the programme. All of our graduates have the support of a senior mentor. The programmes will be very challenging, offering a unique opportunity to develop a range of key skills that will be essential to a successful career with ABP.

"ABP stands out due to its sustainability credentials and its work in improving access for women into the ports industry." Elysia Scully ABP Port Management Graduate at the Port of Ipswich

"My advice to those interested in applying is - dream big and don’t be put off going for something because you don’t think you’re good enough or because women don’t generally do it. Be a trailblazer instead!"

The port industry in the UK is the second largest in Europe and Associated British Ports (ABP) is the largest port operator in the country, with 21 ports around Britain. ABP's ports include Immingham, the UK's largest port by tonnage, and Southampton, the nation's second largest container port, as well as the UK's number one for cars and cruise ships.

Every year, ABP handles around 25% of all UK seaborne trade – more than 85 million tonnes of cargo. Collectively the ports handle around 1.4 million containers, 1.7 million vehicles and around 3 million cruise and ferry passengers each year. ABP also own and run Britain's busiest inland rail terminal, Hams Hall.

"We are delighted to open this year’s Graduate Programme and encourage applications from graduates from all backgrounds." Alison Rumsey ABP Chief HR Officer

"We look forward to finding the next generation of leaders in the maritime and ports industry."
