Today is International Women in Engineering Day, a global awareness campaign to raise the profile of women in engineering and celebrate their achievements. Most importantly the day is an opportunity to showcase the amazing career opportunities available for women in the industry.
At ABP we are dedicated to increasing gender diversity across the career paths that we offer. We actively promote our engineering apprenticeship programmes with girls through local school and college career fairs. We also recently updated our apprenticeship brochure which features the career stories of female apprentices to highlight their journey through ABP’s engineering teams.
Apprentices join ABP as multi-skilled engineers, enabling them to gain experience in both electrical and maintenance engineering before deciding where to specialise. As part of the programme, apprentices gain practical experience on the job and also develop their knowledge of engineering through completing academic assignments and attending college.
Similarly, our graduate programme is structured in a way to ensure long-term success in the profession. Graduates complete rotations in different engineering teams, as well as other departments at ABP to give them a full insight into the professional and organisation.
Aside from our early careers’ programmes, ABP offers a wide range of careers within engineering ranging from entry level positions with roles in engineering, opportunities within the planning and projects teams, through to chartered level senior management roles. ABP is committed to developing the careers of its engineering professionals. Support to become a chartered engineer, is just one of the ways we ensure Continuing Professional Development (CDP) for our employees.
At ABP we understand that we can also retain our top female talent through creating a great place to work. We were the first port operator in the UK to offer female PPE and continuously review the suitability of our equipment to ensure that it is fit for purpose. We offer great rewards for our employees and this year our gender pay gap reduced further by 6% from 1% to -5%, demonstrating to female engineering professionals the long-term career they can have at ABP.
