Can you tell us more about what you did before you joined ABP?
Before joining ABP, I was working part-time in McDonalds, which funded me through two years of college completing a level 1 and 2 in electrical engineering. I was working night shifts on Friday Saturday and Sunday and going to college on Monday mornings. The ABP apprenticeship scheme gave me the opportunity to study alongside working and funded my education, allowing more time designated for college work.
What did you find most appealing about an Apprenticeship at ABP?
I heard about the opportunity through a tutor at college, as they knew some ABP colleagues. I obtained some information on the company and decided to apply after learning ABP was one of the country’s leading port operators.
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
At ABP every day is different, there’s always different jobs to complete and new things for me to learn, preparing myself for completing my apprenticeship and hopefully gaining a full-time job.
What’s the most exciting project you are currently working on?
Currently, the pandemic has meant project work has slightly decreased, but in my first year I was given a big project - to implement a pendant remote operation to control the lock gates in Newport. This was used for my college project and was great to be involved in.
If you could give some advice to young people who would like to follow in your footsteps, what would it be?
Best advice I could give is to always be willing and always ask for help when you need it. Work is full of people who understand what its like to be in your position and will always lend a helping hand as long as you put the effort in and show a willingness to learn.
Applications for ABP’s Apprenticeship Programme are open until Sunday 21st February. Find out more and apply here.
