The Port of Southampton is proud to support the VE Day 80th celebrations in the City. The VE 80 Concert kickstarts a week of celebrations and is hosted by the Royal British Legion, the UK's largest Armed Forces charity and sponsored by Associated British Ports (ABP).
The concert, on Sunday 4 May, will feature the Royal Marines Association Concert Band, special guests and live performances to create a night to remember. It will raise vital funds to support veterans, serving personnel, and their families. Eighty years ago, the nation came together in an incredible show of support and unity. This concert will commemorate that significant moment.
Alastair Welch, Regional Director, said: "It is very fitting that ABP Southampton are supporting such a great event. The port played a key role in supporting the war, particularly its later stages, serving as a key embarkation point for troops and supplies, as well as being involved in constructing the Mulberry Harbours and supporting flying boat operations.”
Claire Smith, Poppy Appeal Manager, said, “We are delighted to be hosting The Royal British Legion Hampshire VE 80 Concert at Southampton Guildhall to honour the generation who served and sacrificed during the Second World War. We are inviting the local community to join us in coming together once again for this special occasion and honouring our heroes. With special thanks to our wonderful sponsors ABP Southampton.”
Councillor Lorna Fielker, Leader of Southampton City Council said: “We are proud to work alongside the Royal British Legion and ABP to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Southampton played a significant part in the Second World War effort, and it is right that we come together to remember and honour the generation who served. This concert will be an exciting, fitting tribute and an opportunity for our city to show its respect and appreciation. ”
Other celebrations in the city include The Proclamation and raising of the VE Day 80 flag at the Civic Centre on Thursday 8 May, followed by The Lord Mayor’s VE Day 80 Tea Party and VE Day 80 Beacon Lighting at Holyrood Church. The celebrations continue into the weekend with street parties and war walking tours.
