A new warehouse has been constructed at the Port of Immingham with the design and build managed by Associated British Ports’ in-house team.
A new, state of the art warehouse has been opened at Associated British Ports (ABP), Port of Immingham, following a design and build fully managed in-house by ABP’s dedicated projects team. Deploying ABP’s market leading in-house capability has delivered a smoother, more cost-effective build for the customer, Viterra, a global leader in the supply of essential agricultural products.
The new facility, designed to support Viterra’s growing demand for efficient and reliable storage solutions, delivers not only value but also highlights our innovative approach to infrastructure development giving customers confidence to choose ABP as their port operator of choice.
Andrew Dawes, Regional Director of the Humber ports said: “The requirement was to increase Viterra‘s capacity in Immingham and we have helped them do that by the investment in this facility to ensure their seamless operations.
“This significant investment underscores our commitment to keeping Britain trading and meets the demands of our valued customers who are at the forefront of that commitment. The project was managed in-house, which ensures ABP gives a value-added service to companies who choose us as their port of choice for business.”
James Maw, Managing Director of Viterra, said: “We’re pleased to announce that we are increasing our storage and handling capacity in the UK’s premier Port of Immingham. Phase 1 of the development began operations in 2022, with the opening of Shed 35. Plans to expand the facility were drawn up in early 2024.
“The ABP in-house project team have delivered a fantastic facility, with Shed 36 now complimenting Shed 35, providing a total storage capacity of approximately 75,000 MT. The substantial opportunity this facility provides Viterra and its customers for both import and export business is backed by APB’s experience and professionalism in handling our cargos and vessels.”
Matthew Wilkinson, Project Engineer at ABP, said: “We work in-house alongside a team of consultants, which means we’re able to deal directly with the customer and assess their needs. This method offers an added value to our customers giving stakeholders confidence in our delivery.
“We always use a leading steel-framed solution for our warehouses, as it efficiently provides the clear spans that best deliver what the customer needs.”
Measuring 163 metres by 45 metres the main contractor has been C R Reynolds, based in Hessle. Built to DSEAR and TASCC standards for agribulk purposes, which includes all food grades including animal feeds, all electrical equipment has been designed and built to be safe in an explosive atmosphere.
The steel portal frame and reinforced concrete walls, which are six metres high, is located on the Humber International Terminal (HIT). It took nearly two years to construct, from development starting in June 2022 to the official opening in May 2025.
Two new weighbridges have also been installed with the incoming one having a Tekpro CS90 automated sampling spear. This method is safer and sees a probe reaching into the wagon to take a sample.
ABP has invested significantly in grain and feed handling operations across the group to maintain customer demand. This has included purchasing new cranes, refurbishing existing cranes and investing in landside equipment across its UK ports.
The Port of Immingham is suitably located in north Lincolnshire and is the largest port in the UK by volume of tonnage. It plays an important role in supporting UK supply chain resilience for both imports and exports across Europe and beyond.
