Drawing on 60 years of experience, ABP Marine Environmental Research (ABPmer) provides specialist marine environmental research and consultancy services.
UK Dredging (UKD) operates the largest British-owned dredging fleet and specialises in the provision of reliable and cost effective port maintenance dredging services.
Associated British Ports (ABP) recently welcomed more than 400 students from local schools based in Southampton and the New Forest to the Ocean Cruise Terminal in Southampton for a hands-on introduction to careers in the maritime and transport sectors.
The event, managed by the Maritime and Transport Careers Programme (MTCP), brought together a wide range of organisations to showcase the exciting career paths and apprenticeship opportunities available across the industry. As a major employer in Southampton and beyond, ABP is proud to support initiatives that connect local talent with future opportunities.
Katie Bruce, Engagement Officer for the MTCP, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many students engaging with the sector and discovering the breadth of roles available. Events like this are vital in helping young people make informed decisions about their futures.”
Fifteen local organisations exhibited at the event, including ABP, DP World, Carnival UK, Red Funnel, Meachers Global Transport, Portsmouth International Port, Whitaker Tankers, SMS Towage, Portico, Ferry Speed, Solent Stevedores, and Williams Shipping. Students had the opportunity to speak directly with employers during a speed networking session, gaining insights into careers, apprenticeships, and graduate programmes.
Outside the terminal, students got hands-on experience with HGV cabins, the Tech Truck from Fareham College, and even boarded a Whitaker tanker vessel, offering a unique glimpse into the real-world operations of the sector.
Tom Dynes, General Manager of Landside Operations at ABP, said, “We enjoy hosting events like this and welcoming young people to the port, inspiring them to explore careers in maritime and transport. The enthusiasm from students and the dedication of our industry partners made it a really memorable day. MTCP and this careers day represent the first initiative of its kind in the UK, bringing private organisations together to connect with and motivate young people. We’re proud to be leading the way with MTCP. A big thank you to the ABP team for being on hand to provide extra support throughout the day, especially with the quayside activities.”
Kim Charett, Careers and Learning Resource Manager, Applemore College said: “The Maritime and Transport Careers Day gave our students an invaluable opportunity to explore real-world career pathways. They engaged with industry professionals, gained insight into the skills and qualifications required, and took part in hands-on activities that connected classroom learning to practical applications. Experiences like this inspire confidence and help students make informed decisions about their future.
In addition to the MTCP careers day, ABP Southampton has launched a new educational outreach programme aimed at engaging local schools and colleges near the Port of Southampton and Solent Gateway. Its goal is to inspire the next generation to explore the wide range of careers available in the maritime sector. From graduate programmes to apprenticeships, and roles in marine piloting, stevedoring, engineering, project management, cruise operations, and commercial, property, and finance management.
