January 11, 2019

Employees from ABP Southampton paid a visit to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) base at Thruxton recently to present the charity with a cheque for the fundraising total collected by the organisation this year.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was ABP Southampton’s chosen Charity of the Year for 2018 and ABP employees undertook a series of fundraising activities throughout the year, raising over £13,800 in total.

The cheque was presented to the charity’s Partnership Manager Ray Southam by ‘Team Madmen’ a group who took on the challenge of paddling from Devizes to Westminster earlier in the year, raising over £10,000 for the cause.

The charity provides an advanced critical care team to sick and injured people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight when they need it most. The Air Ambulance critical care team are available 24 hours a day 365 day a year and provide support for everything from road traffic collisions to sporting incidents and other accidents and emergencies. The team is made up of a highly-skilled crew of doctors, paramedics and pilots and can be at the scene of an accident within minutes to deliver the same level of care as a hospital emergency department.

Ray Southam said: “The support we have received from everyone at ABP Southampton has been truly outstanding. The team has continually surprised us with their innovative fundraising ideas and we are so grateful to everyone who gave up their time to help us. The money they have raised will ensure we can continue providing our life-saving service to those who need us across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Thank you ABP Southampton.”

As well as the Devizes to Westminster paddle challenge, other fundraising highlights during the year included a charity golf day and a parking collection during Southampton Boat Show.

Alastair Welch, Director at ABP Southampton said: “We are delighted to provide this donation to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance as the work that the air ambulance critical care team do in saving lives is priceless.

“Teams from across the port and ABP have done a tremendous job with various fundraising activities. I’m extremely proud of all employees who have either taken part in a fundraising challenge themselves or donated to this worthy cause.”
