Looking to the Future with new ABP Southampton Apprentices
December 15, 2017
ENGINEERING technicians Abigail Jones and Alfie Crump are the latest recruits to join the Port of Southampton Apprenticeship Scheme.
The teenagers are currently undertaking their studies which include BTEC and NVQ qualifications at Southampton Engineering Training Association (SETA) and looking forward to joining the port team in July 2018 as their studies progress.
Abigail,17, who recently completed her GCSEs at Noadswood School opted to join the Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technicians apprenticeship scheme rather than going to university.
“I have benefitted much more from an apprenticeship and not the traditional degree route because it is real world experience, it gives you real life skills that you can transfer and apply straight away and you do get a nationally recognised qualification.
“Another benefit is that it is an “Earn while you Learn” course so apprentices do not have to pay fees for their tuition, you are treated as a regular employee – unlike degrees which can run you into thousands of pounds of debt,” she said.
Alfie Crump,17, explained a family member works on the port and he was keen to follow in his footsteps.
“I went to an open-day and that got me interested in the apprenticeship scheme - my uncle works at DP World so I was aware of the job opportunities here.
“I want to do well and enjoy my time at the port,” he said.
There are four apprentices currently working at the port and Abigail and Alfie will take that total up to six.
Apprentice Manager, Julie Freemantle said: “It’s great to have Alfie and Abigail on board with us at ABP – they have made an impressive start to their apprenticeship programme and we look forward to seeing them develop in the future.”
ABP operates a series of successful apprenticeship programmes across its 21 ports in the UK and currently employs over 80 apprentices in a variety of different roles including engineering, marine pilotage, chartered surveying and business administration.
They offer a fantastic opportunity to develop a successful career at the UK’s largest port operator. For more information on how to apply for the next round of apprentice recruitment visit www.abports.co.uk
