An agreement to sponsor the ABP Southampton Marathon for the next three years has just been signed.
Ever since the Half Marathon, 10k – and last year the full Marathon – came to the streets of Southampton, the event has been sponsored by the port.
Thousands of runners have taken part in the popular event (including many ABP employees) and Director Alastair Welch, said he was delighted to be able to continue the port’s support.
As well as the sponsorship deal, the port will continue to encourage voluntary groups and organisations to get involved as milemakers. Each group that helps out on the day receives £250 and the milemaker group that is judged the best also receives a further £250.
In 2017 there were 850 individual milemakers and charities benefited by up to £500,000 as a result of the efforts of runners.
ABP Southampton Director Alastair Welch said: “It is great to see how the ABP Southampton Marathon has become such an important part of the sporting calendar in the city.
“The atmosphere on the day itself is so positive, with families cheering on the runners as they pound the streets.
“We are delighted to continue our support for the ABP Southampton Marathon and look forward to seeing it go from strength to strength.”
Rees Leisure organise the annual running events which this year attracted 9,000 runners and 30,000 spectators.
Organiser, Chris Rees said: “We are delighted that ABP Southampton will be continuing to support the ABP Southampton Marathon.
“ABP has supported this event since its inception and has helped to raise over £600,000 for local good causes and over 50 local groups have benefited directly from being part of the fantastic volunteers the ABP Milemakers.
“With ABP's continued support this event has now become a must-do for runners of all abilities and has really put Southampton on the map.”
Cabinet member for Communities, Culture and Leisure at Southampton City Council, Councillor Satvir Kaur, said: “Southampton is the place where something is always happening and business sponsorship of events in Southampton is incredibly important for their sustainability.
“ABP’s support of our marathon, half marathon and 10k run is vital for events such as these and their commitment means thousands will be thrilled that these events will be firmly cemented into their calendars for coming years.
“As well as the obvious health benefits to runners, over half a million pounds has already been raised for local charities, with fundraising for these causes almost guaranteed to exceed over one million over the next three years.
“The ABP Marathon also brings in tens of thousands of visitors to Southampton, which is a great boost to the local economy and with ABP’s continued backing, we’re looking forward to more and more people getting involved in the events every year.”
ABP Southampton also supports the New Forest Marathon by match-funding money raised for the local community.
