Last year, the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Yacht club swimming division, the Water Rats, hosted the town’s first open water swimming event in 15 years. The event, which was proudly revived by Pete Winchester MBE and friends proved to be a huge success.
With support and sponsorship from leading port provider ABP, the Great Grimsby Dock challenge saw over 80 swimmers taking part on the day.
Due to high public demand, the Water Rats have announced that once again, the open water dock challenge will take place for those who are brave enough to dip their toes into the chilly water.
The challenge will be held at ABP’s Alexandra Dock in Grimsby on 10th September and will this year see a Junior 1 mile race be added to the schedule as well as an Olympic distance 10k.
Once again, the start and finish located at the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Yacht Club on Lockhill Road and will welcome open water swimmers from across the UK who can also enter a one-mile race, a two-mile race and a four-mile race for more experienced swimmers.
Long standing Water Rats member, Pete Winchester is keen for the event to become a regular feature on the region’s sporting calendar.
He said: “We are extremely grateful to ABP for allowing us the use of the docks, as well as them being the main event sponsors. The revived event last year proved to be a fantastically enjoyable day and we are very much hoping for the same again this year.”
ABP Marine and Operations Manager Grimsby, Phil Christy has been instrumental in working with the Water Rats to ensure the event can go ahead.
He said: “Whilst Alexandra Dock is still a commercial location, ABP allow open water swimming to take place through the Grimsby Water Rats swimming club as they meticulously plan operating procedures and rules for swimmers to ensure their safety and separation from commercial traffic. We are proud to once again be supporting the challenge and can’t wait to watch the event unfold.”
The Great Grimsby Dock Swim Challenge will take place on Sunday 10th September with the first race starting at 10am. For more information, please visit: www.gcyc.co.uk/water_rats/swim_challenge/swim_challenge.html
