Southampton voted UK’s best cruise departure port for eighth year running

October 12, 2016

The Port of Southampton has been named as the UK’s best cruise departure port for the eighth year running by Cruise Critic, the world’s leading reviews site and online community.

The port will welcome over 1.8m cruise passengers in 2016, with guests travelling to and from destinations such as the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and Scandinavia.

Over the last 12 months, ABP Southampton, together with its partners, has invested heavily in its cruise terminals. The refurbishment of the QEII Terminal is the most recent of these developments and has improved passenger flows, access arrangements and crew facilities across all four cruise terminals.

The award winners were announced today (12 October) and were selected by a global panel of impartial cruise experts from Cruise Critic to highlight the best in the industry across a number of categories.

Cruise Critic’s team of editors said: “Southampton might well enjoy a near-unassailable position as Best UK Departure Port, claiming the top spot for the eighth year in a row, but the port – Europe’s busiest in terms of turnarounds – does not rest on its laurels. As well as multimillion-dollar refurbishments for Mayflower Terminal and City Cruise Terminal, QE2 Terminal enjoyed a £5m refurbishment earlier this year.”

Alastair Welch, director at ABP Southampton, said: “We are very proud to have been named as the UK’s best cruise departure port for the eighth consecutive year.

“Everyone at the Port of Southampton makes it the successful place it is, and this win is testament to the excellent work from the team who strive to provide the best experience at our cruise terminals.

“Partnerships and investment are key to our success as a cruise port, and we’re keen to continue improving our service in order to meet both the existing vessel, and exciting new build, requirements over the coming years.”

Adam Coulter, Cruise Critic UK editor, said: “It’s been a mammoth year for ocean, river and luxury cruise ship launches – many of which are the largest addition to each line’s fleet. These awards consider the needs of UK travellers - whatever their budget, and personal preferences – to help them plan the perfect holiday on the water.

“The ever-increasing itinerary and ship options offered are impressive, and by sharing our combined first-hand insight and expertise, we can celebrate some of the top choices available.”
