National Armed Forces Day strikes gold thanks to ABP

June 2, 2016

Councillor Peter Wheatley, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Skills and Housing meets with Port Manager for Grimsby and Immingham, Mike Sellers and Dock Master, Phil Christy to announce ABP’s sponsorship of National Armed Forces Day.

ABP has been named as Gold Sponsor for Armed Forces Day National Event, which this year will be hosted in Cleethorpes on the south bank of the Humber.

This is the first time the event, celebrations for which will take place over the weekend of the 24th – 26th June, has been hosted by a borough rather than a major city.

The main event on the 25th June will feature a formal parade through Cleethorpes, a military show in Meridian Park, air and land based displays, as well as displays of military assets and family-focussed activities throughout the weekend. The event is also likely to attract a number of VIPs including high-ranking military personnel, senior ministers, civic dignitaries and hopefully, a member of the Royal Family.

ABP will be hosting a number of Naval vessels in Grimsby and will be throwing open the gates of Royal Dock on Sunday 26th June for people to visit the vessels and enjoy more family-friendly activities, including the Sea Cadets band and pilot-launch trips around the dock complex.

ABP Director Humber Simon Bird explained why ABP wanted to support National Armed Forces Day. He said: “It’s not often that an event of this calibre comes to the Humber region and we’re absolutely delighted that it has because the eyes of the nation will be on North East Lincolnshire for the duration of the celebrations.

“It’s important that we recognise and honour the contribution made by our servicemen and women and the fact that we can do this here in Cleethorpes is a real privilege. ABP is thrilled to be supporting National Armed Forces Day and we’re determined to make sure the 2016 event is the best yet.”

Councillor Ray Oxby, Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, continues: “We have an amazing military history in North East Lincolnshire, involving all the forces, land, sea and air. We’re extremely proud, as a borough, to be hosting the National Event and hope that people will come to visit not only for this event, but will keep coming back.

“I’d like to thank ABP particularly for the support they’re offering to this event, and I look forward to welcoming people to the event, the docks and all the many positive attractions and opportunities the Borough has to offer"
