ABP on course for 100-hole golf challenge!

July 3, 2012

Celebrations for Immingham 100 have been met with enthusiasm by Associated British Ports’ (ABP) employees, who are keen to use their own skills any way they can to help raise money for the Immingham 100 Legacy Fund, and participants in the 100 Holes Golf Challenge are no exception.

When most golfers will tell you that 18 holes are just about enough, four intrepid ABP employees will attempt 100 holes in one day. The event, on Monday, 9 July, takes place at Immingham Golf Club.

Mark Ashman, Finance Manager; Graham Hodge, Deputy Dock Master Humber; Jonathan Williams, Operations Planning Supervisor; and Steve Williams, Operations Manager will tee off at 4am – a time normally reserved for milkmen and the occasional stray cat – and expect to take between 12 and 16 hours to complete the event “just in time to collapse into a comfy chair and enjoy the 101st!” said Jonathan Williams.

He added: “We are all keen golfers and had been looking for a way to get involved and raise money for the Legacy Fund. This event allows us to do that while doing something we love… although we might not be so keen once it’s over!”

“Thankfully, Steve Gilboy of APM Commercials – and Chairman of Immingham Golf Club – has generously donated a buggy and fuel for the day. Which is great because we’re probably going to need it!”

Darryl Frame, Club Professional at Immingham Golf Club, said:  “We are proud to support ABP’s 100 Hole Challenge at Immingham Golf Club.   The team will be covering a minimum of 19 miles during the day – and that’s only if they hit the ball in a straight line!”

Enthusiasm for Immingham 100 – and golf, it seems – has also extended to the wider port community. The challenge inspired Carol Lake, whose belated husband Denis – formerly joint Managing Director of Humberside Sea & Land Services and Director of Intermar Shipping – made an unprecedented contribution to the development of the Port of Immingham. Mrs Lake recently undertook 100 holes of golf over a weekend and  raised over £1,000 for the Legacy Fund.
