ABP GRIMSBY & IMMINGHAM ANNOUNCES PORT COMMUNITY OPEN DAY - SATURDAY 5 JULY 2008 Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Grimsby & Immingham is opening its doors on Saturday 5 July, giving the local community the opportunity to see inside the UK’s largest port. The event will be based at Grimsby’s Fish Docks, with organised tours taking in the commercial docks at Grimsby as well as its sister Port of Immingham, which together handle 58 million tonnes of cargo each year. The community open day will run from 10am to 4pm, with a wide range of activities on offer, including river trips in one of ABP’s pilot launches, Grimsby dock-tower tours (for which pre-booking is required*), exhibitions, fairground rides, stalls, live music and street theatre. The community open day will also include the finale of ABP’s Pedal the Ports fundraiser for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
The tandem starts at Grimsby on Friday 6 June (ridden by Nick Palmer’s two children). All money raised during the community open day will also go to the nominated MND charities, Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Sheffield Institute Foundation for MND. John Fitzgerald, ABP Port Director, Grimsby & Immingham, commented: "The demands of health and safety and security normally restrict the opportunity to open our ports to our local communities. I am keen, however, to increase community awareness of their vital role in the local economy. For example, it is estimated that over 15,000 people rely directly on the Port of Grimsby & Immingham for employment and we continue to invest huge sums in the development of our facilities and services. We hope the community open day will be informative but also fun and we have organised a wide range of activities for people to enjoy." He added: "MND is a relatively rare condition, caused by the breakdown of the nerve cells in the brain that control the muscles, which causes gradual muscular weakness and wasting. MND has no cure and scientists are not yet sure why the disease strikes, which is why we need to support research into this dreadful disease. " *To pre-book the river trip or the Grimsby dock tower tours please call the booking line on 07714 411 710 between 9am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. Please note, there will be a fee for the dock-tower and boat tours, which will be donated to the nominated charities. 29th May 2008
