ABP DONATES NEW VESSELTO BARROW SEA CADETS

Barrow Sea Cadets yesterday took possession of a new rigid inflatable boat (RIB), purchased with a £5,000 donation from the owner of the Port of Barrow, Associated British Ports (ABP). In a presentation held at the port’s Ramsden Dock, ABP Harbour Master David Carpenter delivered the RIB from the water to a reception of Sea Cadets, led by their Commanding Officer, Lt Ted Creighton. After a brief ceremony outside the John Fisher Sailing Centre, the vessel was handed over to the cadets, who proceeded to show off its capabilities.

Lt Creighton said:

“We are very grateful to ABP for this generous donation. Our existing craft has served the unit well for the last fifteen years, but is now starting to show its age, so this new RIB arrives at just the right time.”

The 16ft RIB comes equipped with a 50hp engine, and will fill a number of roles in the training exercises carried out by the Sea Cadets. Its power and nimble handling make it ideal for use as a safety boat in supporting the waterborne activities available to members of the unit, which include sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. The RIB can also be used in its own right, with senior cadets able to work towards Royal Yachting Association (RYA) certificates in powerboating.

Nick Ridehalgh, ABP Port Manager, North-West Ports, commented:

“ABP has had a long and productive relationship with Barrow Sea Cadets, and we are delighted to be able to help them with this donation. Several of our staff in Barrow are associated with the unit, and as our dockside neighbours, we wish them well with their continuing good work.”

Notes to Editors:

1) The Sea Cadet Corps is a nationwide voluntary youth organisation, open to all young people aged 12 to 18. It is Britain's most successful nautical organisation for the development of young people. With its beginnings dating as far back as 1854, the Sea Cadets probably has the longest continuous history of any youth movement in the UK, and has grown over the years to the point where just under 400 units nationwide regularly welcome more than 13,000 cadets.

2) ABP, the UK’s leading and largest port operator, owns and operates 21 ports around the country - Ayr, Barrow, Barry, Cardiff, Fleetwood, Garston, Goole, Grimsby, Hull, Immingham, Ipswich, King’s Lynn, Lowestoft, Newport, Plymouth, Port Talbot, Silloth, Southampton, Swansea, Teignmouth, and Troon.
