FULL AHEAD FOR ABP’S EAST ANGLIAN MARINAS

Staff at Lowestoft Haven Marina (LHM), owned and operated by Associated British Ports (ABP), are celebrating their recent award of five “Gold Anchors” in the rating system operated by the industry body, the Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA). The award is the highest possible that can be achieved, and reflects the outstanding facilities available to users of the marina. These include a designated visitors’ pontoon, boat lift and onshore storage, luxury showers, and access to engineering and repair services, boat sales and a restaurant.

The award comes at a busy time for LHM, with ABP investing some £500,000 in the development of a new satellite site in the Port of Lowestoft’s Hamilton Dock. The site will house 46 new berths in an area adjacent to the town centre, and is due to be completed by spring 2008. Hamilton Dock’s location, accessible within minutes of the open water, makes it particularly suitable for visiting yachtsmen.

Sarah Hanna, ABP Marina Manager, LHM, said:

“The award of our fifth “Gold Anchor” is a tribute to all the efforts of our staff, who, in the three-and-a-half years since we opened, have worked extremely hard to establish Lowestoft Haven Marina as one of the most attractive and accessible marinas for the yachting community on the East Coast.”

Improvements are also due to be undertaken at ABP’s other marina in East Anglia - Ipswich Haven Marina (IHM) - where extra pontoons are being installed in the port’s Wet Dock. These pontoons will provide another 20 berths (bringing the total capacity to 270 vessels), and will help to cater for the growing demand for the use of Ipswich as a yachting base. IHM had also been awarded five “Gold Anchors” by TYHA.

Alastair MacFarlane, ABP Port Manager, East Anglian Ports, commented:

“The success of our marinas in East Anglia shows what can be achieved alongside our traditional port activities. The development of these facilities for the area’s growing leisure market is also playing a significant role in attracting visitors to our region.”
