£4.5 MILLION INVESTMENT BOOST FOR ABP EXXTOR TERMINAL Container-handling capacity at Exxtor Terminal, located at Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Immingham, has received a major boost following ABP’s decision to implement a £4.5m scheme to develop the terminal. As part of the scheme, two rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes are being purchased to support the two units already utilised at the terminal. The new cranes will greatly enhance Exxtor’s container-storage density and improve its handling efficiencies, increasing the container capacity in the main terminal by 100 per cent. The scheme will also finance resurfacing work at the terminal, to accommodate new RTG runways and to create a storage area for empty containers around the perimeter of the main terminal. The terminal’s computerised yard-management system will also be upgraded. Commenting on this investment, Nick Palmer, ABP Port Director, Grimsby & Immingham, said: “This investment will complete the restructuring of the Exxtor Terminal and allow the facility to build on its established container trade. The terminal has seen many changes in recent years while maintaining an excellent reputation for service. This investment by ABP will give a platform for future growth in the unit-load market.” Immingham is already the UK’s largest East Coast unit-load port, with over 50 roll-on/roll-off and container sailings per week to ports in northern Europe, the Baltic countries and Scandinavia. In addition, the port is now a regional centre for deep-sea container imports, enabling customers to avoid heavily congested road and rail networks in the south of England by trans-shipping deep-sea containers to Immingham on regular short-sea or feeder vessels. 31st October 2007
