ABP HELPS MORECAMBE BAY PARTNERSHIP TIDY UP

Associated British Ports (ABP) – the owners of the Port of Barrow – is to donate a full set of litter-picking equipment to the Morecambe Bay Partnership on 15 August. The Partnership’s BeachCare programme invites local volunteers to assist in removing marine litter from the Morecambe Bay coastline, and has proved so popular (with more than 2,000 people having taken part in the last four years) that the need for new equipment has become increasingly urgent.

ABP will, therefore, present the Morecambe Bay Partnership with enough items, including long-handled litter-pickers, heavy-duty gloves, and bags for the storage of hazardous waste, to supply up to 20 volunteers in and around Barrow. It has previously been necessary to move equipment around the Bay required, so a new set that can be kept locally will make it much easier for more communities to take part and make a real difference in their areas.

Helen Annan, BeachCare Officer for the Morecambe Bay Partnership, said: “Having a new set of equipment will be a huge step forward in helping us to support more volunteers and expand our activities into new locations. We would like to thank ABP for their generosity in providing the funding for this new equipment."

Nick Ridehalgh, ABP Port Manager, North-West Ports, said:

"As owners and operators of the Port of Barrow, as well as 20 other ports around the UK, we understand the extreme importance of maintaining a healthy coastline for the benefit of the environment, the wildlife and the local community. We are therefore happy to help the Morecambe Bay Partnership in their efforts at Barrow and wish them and their volunteers the greatest success in their campaign."

Nick will formally hand over the new equipment at the Port of Barrow’s Cavendish Dock at 5pm on Wednesday, 15 August. The event will coincide with a beach-clean organized by the Morecambe Bay Partnership; all members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate.
