IT’S NO ACCIDENT; ABP TEAMS WIN FIRST AID COMPETITION
First aiders from Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Ports of Goole, Immingham and Ipswich have claimed victory in Port Skills and Safety Ltd’s (PSSL) 18th National First Aid Competition.
Teams representing the spectrum of the UK’s ports and ports-related industries descended on Llandudno for the annual one-day event. The competition - which is run by PSSL to help improve first-aid skills among the nation’s port operatives - saw competitors undertake a range of written and practical tests designed to challenge their knowledge of how to administer first aid to those who have suffered electric shocks, eye injuries, fractured bones and severe cuts, among other accidents. PSSL organises the competition as part of its wider remit to promote high standards of health and safety in the UK ports industry.
The competition comprised a number of divisions for novices, as well as for more advanced entrants. Prizes were also awarded to the best individual and best team overall.
The ABP teams prepared carefully for the competition for seven months by attending a series of intensive first-aid training sessions and dedicating much of their free time to hours of private study. Their diligence paid off with David Miller and Stuart Whiteley from the Port of Goole emerging as winners of the advanced division and highest scorers in the written tests, while Mick Connell and Linda Pipe from the Port of Ipswich claimed victory in the novice pairs category.
Matthew Kennerley, ABP Port Director for Hull & Goole, said that these were outstanding achievements for the ABP ports which took part:
“These prizes and achievements demonstrate the commitment of ABP staff to improving knowledge and practice of first-aid skills to an extremely high level. They also show that ABP and its employees regard first aid-skills as a vital aspect of its health and safety regime, which is a key element to the successful running of its day-to-day operations.
The ABP teams from the Ports of Goole and Immingham will now go on to represent the UK ports industry at the national St John Ambulance UK Championship in November this year, where they will compete for the Grand Prior Trophy, facing the best first-aid teams from other industries and organisations, such as the police, fire and rescue services and St John Ambulance.
