ABP SOUTHAMPTON HANDLES LOGS FOR FIRST TIME IN 20 YEARS
Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Southampton has recently handled a shipment of pre-cut logs for the first time in some 20 years.
The first shipment of 1,900 tonnes of logs, bound for Ghent, was exported through the port in early June, part of a new service operated by PJ Timber.
Although timber in log form was previously a major trade at Southampton – as evidenced in the famous 1917 painting by Christopher Nevinson, “Loading Timber at Southampton Docks” – in recent years the port has focused investments on its “three Cs” of cars, cruises and containers, and there have been no shipments of logs through the port in recent memory.
Doug Morrison, ABP Port Director, Port of Southampton, explains: “This new service is a significant one for Southampton because it shows that we remain a highly versatile port capable of handling a wide range of different cargoes, in line with the demands of our customers.
“While we have been experiencing very strong growth in both our container and cruise businesses over recent years, all trades are important to us and we hope to handle many more shipments of logs in the future.”
