SILVER ROSPA AWARD IN ABP’S SAFE HANDS Associated British Ports’ (ABP) commendable health and safety practice has been recognised at this year’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Occupational Health & Safety Awards, when the Company was presented with “Silver” in the Achievement Awards category. The RoSPA awards are given to companies that reduce the number of accidents in their workplace, and which exhibit a strong health and safety management structure. The award, which is the second Silver ABP has collected in as many years, was presented to Steve Giblin, ABP Group Safety Manager, at RoSPA’s annual awards dinner, held at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham. As a large-scale industrial company that owns and operates 21 ports around the UK, a significant number of ABP’s employees work in potentially hazardous environments. As a consequence, the Company relies on robust safety systems to minimise the risk of accidents, basing its approach on the belief that accidents and injuries sustained at work are preventable. The Company has invested a great deal of time and effort in hard-hitting awareness campaigns that educate its staff on the importance of working safely and, in 2006, was delighted to see its reportable injury rate fall to 5.3 injuries per thousand employees, down from 9.3 in 2005. The ports industry average in 2006 was 28.6 accidents per thousand employees. Steve Giblin, ABP Group Safety Manager, said: “This is a great achievement, especially because it recognises our continued drive to make our ports safer workplaces for our employees, contractors and everyone else. While we will not be wholly satisfied until we can eliminate the possibility of all preventable accidents, we can take pride in knowing that ABP has improved its health and safety performance year on year.” 4th June 2007
