INVESTMENT BOOST TO TIMBER TRADE AT KING’S LYNN Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of King’s Lynn has been handling substantial volumes of forest products following the signing of a one-year term agreement with Swedish timber company Vida Wood AB to handle approximately 50,000 cu m of carcassing timber a year from Halmstad, Sweden. The first shipment of 3640 cu m of timber arrived onboard m.v. Rika at the end of January, and the service is currently running monthly. The timber is destined for Travis Perkins’ distribution centre located at the port and for numerous depots nationwide. In order to accommodate the increased volumes in forest-product imports, ABP has invested some £90,000 to construct an outdoor storage area for the extra shipments of timber that are being generated by this agreement. The Port of King’s Lynn has a long-established reputation for excellence in timber-handling and distribution, having been awarded the ‘Most Improved Stevedoring Performance’ award from customers Finnforest UK, after topping their supplier-productivity index. Matt Jukes, Port Director for ABP’s Short-Sea Ports, said: “I am delighted that Travis Perkins has decided to expand their timber-handling operations at the Port of King’s Lynn. The port is ideally located to handle cargo imports from Scandinavia and the Baltic states and has an excellent forest-products handling record and expertise. For these reasons, I am confident that the port will continue to offer the highest standards of service to its timber customers.” 9th May 2007
