KUDOS TO SOUTH WALES PORTS FOR BULK CARGO-HANDLING EXCELLENCE

For their consistently high levels of cargo-handling service, Associated British Ports’ (ABP) South Wales Ports of Newport, Port Talbot and Swansea recently received ISO 9001:2000 accreditation from the British Standards Institution (BSI), the body responsible for promulgating standards of excellence in all areas of the service and manufacturing industries.

The BSI accreditation is an illustrious accolade for ABP’s three bulk-handling ports in South Wales. In order to be accredited, the ports were required to implement a quality-management system that demonstrates that the ports provide suitable infrastructure, resources and environmental conditions to offer a consistently high level of service to bulk vessels calling at the port.

In addition, ABP’s Cardiff office has also been accredited by the BSI for providing information technology and other various management services, including purchasing, to ABP’s five South Wales ports.

Paul Tremayne, Operations Superintendent for ABP South Wales, said:

“The Ports of Newport, Port Talbot and Swansea are part of a select number of UK ports to have been granted ISO 9001:2000 accreditation for the high quality of their bulk-handling operations. Operators of bulk carriers can be confident knowing they will benefit from these ports’ first-class, quality-management practices in the handling of their bulk cargoes.”

John Fitzgerald, Port Director for ABP’s South Wales Ports, said:

“This prestigious ISO 9001:2000 accreditation highlights the Company’s commitment to the continuous improvement of the standards of our port operations. The project team and all our staff have worked very hard to secure this accreditation and I am very pleased with this excellent result. Our customers have already seen the benefits of improved management systems and we are determined to continue to develop the levels of service we provide.”
