ABPmer REAPS ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD ABP Marine Environmental Research (ABPmer) – Associated British Ports’ Southampton-based marine-research arm – was recently commended at the Environment Agency’s Project Excellence Awards when it was awarded Joint-Runner-Up in the ‘Innovation and Technical Excellence’ category. The Severn Estuary Coastal Habitat Management Plan –produced by ABPmer and technical consultancy firms Jacobs Babtie and Royal Haskoning – was one of only 12 projects, out of 98, that was shortlisted for the award. Dr Natalie Frost, ABPmer Project Manager, assisted in the project’s presentation to the awards’ judging panel, which included the President of the Institute of Civil Engineers and directors of the Environment Agency. Dr Frost said: “The ABPmer team is extremely pleased that the Environment Agency has recognised our hard work with this prestigious accolade. We have spent over one year working on this project, which examined the way in which the Severn Estuary coastal habitats will evolve over the next century. The information from this project will be used to generate a flood risk and coastal management strategy that will protect these habitats.” Bill Cooper, ABPmer Managing Director, said: “We work very closely with the Environment Agency and it is always satisfying to have such positive feedback from them. This award represents ABPmer’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of research and we will continue to build on our wealth of experience whilst undertaking the Greater Thames Estuary Coastal Habitat Management Plan.” Tim Ive, Project Manager: National Capital Programme Management Service, Environment Agency, said: “ABPmer staff adopted a positive ‘can do’ approach that contributed to the project being carried out to the highest standards, in an innovative, timely and efficient manner.” 7th December 2006
