LOWESTOFT HAVEN MARINA CELEBRATES SECOND BIRTHDAY Staff at Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Lowestoft Haven Marina held an Open Day on Saturday, 27 May 2006 to celebrate the second anniversary of the marina’s opening. Mariners young and old alike, including Bill and Laurel Cooper, co-authors of the bestselling yacht-cruising guide Sell up and Sail, braved persistent rain to witness life-raft and flare demonstrations given by members of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Between demonstrations, visitors were entertained by an Irish folk-music band. There were also pleasure-craft displays organised by the marina’s resident yacht brokerage, Fox’s Yacht Sales. Guests were also able to pick up bargains at one of the 15 onsite stalls, which sold a variety of new and second-hand nautical equipment. The celebrations came to a close with the cutting of a commemorative birthday cake and a raffle draw. Winners of the draw received prizes including a year’s free subscription to leisure-boating publication Norfolk Afloat and tickets to this year’s Southampton Boat Show. Sarah Hanna, Marina Manager of Lowestoft Haven Marina, said: “Lowestoft Haven Marina’s second anniversary went off with a bang, despite the bad weather. Some 150 people, including local residents and members of the yachting community, came to our Open Day, and we hope they will come again next year, as the marina gains in popularity.” Bill and Laurel Cooper said: “We came along to the Open Day to purchase some items for our new boat and found the friendly reception from the staff and the marina’s lovely setting much to our liking.” Lowestoft Haven Marina, which was officially opened in May 2004, has quickly established itself as a popular destination for yachtsmen, mainly due to its easy access to the open sea and the Norfolk Broads. The 140-berth marina has attracted over 300 visiting yachts from as far afield as Australia, the USA and mainland Europe, and boasts a current occupancy rate of over 70 per cent. The marina, which includes a 70-tonne boat hoist, restaurant, yacht brokerage and marine-repair workshop among its facilities, was awarded four gold anchors by The Yacht Harbour Association – just one grade below the highest ranking that can be bestowed upon a European marina. 13th June 2006
