NEW SERVICE AT ABP BARROW WILL RID BRITAIN’S ROADS OF OVER 600,000 LORRY MILES
The arrival of a shipment of pulp paper at Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Barrow has marked the start of a new environmentally friendly distribution service for global health and hygiene company Kimberly-Clark that will remove more than 600,000 lorry miles every year from Britain’s roads.
An estimated 41,000 tonnes of pulp will now be shipped annually, direct from Flushing in Holland, to ABP Barrow. Previously, the product was shipped through Kimberly-Clark’s terminal on the River Thames and then transported by road to its Barrow paper mill. The new operation will spare Britain’s busy road networks from the 1,783 350-mile long lorry journeys formerly needed to deliver the product to the factory every year.
The pulp will be shipped through the port for onward delivery to Kimberly- Clark’s nearby tissue-paper factory in Barrow, which uses up to 90,000 tonnes of the material every year, and has recently seen the start of the first phase of a £40 million expansion programme. Kimberly-Clark is a United States-based corporation with manufacturing operations in 38 countries. Some of its well-known brands include Kleenex, Andrex, Kotex and Huggies.
Peter Taylor, Manager of Kimberly-Clark’s Barrow-in-Furness Mill, commented: “Environmental considerations, combined with those of being a good neighbour within the local community, are at the heart of our business and this arrangement benefits all. We look forward to working with ABP and establishing a strong partnership for the future.”
Nick Ridehalgh, ABP Port Manager, Port of Barrow, said: “We are delighted to welcome the first shipment of pulp for Kimberly-Clark, as it marks an exciting commercial development for the Port of Barrow. The tissue-paper factory is an important economic driver for the area and we are glad to facilitate its supply of raw materials. “This new agreement demonstrates ABP’s commitment to pursuing commercial opportunities that support the Government’s policy of promoting the sustainable distribution of goods, particularly through short-sea shipping.”
