CRUISE SHIP DEUTSCHLAND RETURNS TO WARM WELCOME IN BARROW

This Saturday, 3 June, the Port of Barrow will welcome cruise ship Deutschland, which is returning to the port after making its first visit in May 2005. Deutschland’s return demonstrates the growing attraction of Barrow to cruise ships – the port is widely considered to be the “Gateway to the English Lake District.”

Deutschland will come to Barrow from Dublin, before leaving for Invergordon late on Saturday afternoon. The ship, which can carry 513 passengers and 260 crewmembers, is on a 14-night ‘round-Britain’ cruise that started in Hamburg on 26 May and will end in that city on 9 June. The 175-m long, 22,400-tonne vessel, part of the Peter Deilmann Cruises fleet, was built in 1998. The ship is celebrated for its distinctive Art Deco style.

The Port of Barrow, owned and operated by Associated British Ports (ABP), is working in conjunction with partners including Barrow Borough Council, the Lake District Tourism Peninsulas Partnership, Cumbria Tourist Board and West Lakes Renaissance to take advantage of the increasing popularity of the booming cruise market and promote Barrow as a popular cruise stop-over.

In recent years, following a series of calls from such well-known vessels as Minerva II, Ocean Majesty and Silver Wind, the port has won a reputation for the warmth of its welcome. For Deutschland’s visit, a Tourist Information Centre will be set up on the quayside for the day and there will be interpreters for German-speaking passengers. Free shuttle buses will run all day to Barrow town centre and local attractions, while bands Red Rose Brass and the Barrow Steelworks Band will entertain the passengers when they disembark the ship and when they depart. Passenger-information packs, including a German-language leaflet, have been sent to the ship and will be distributed to the passengers prior to their arrival in Barrow.

Chris Clouter, Port Operations Manager, ABP Barrow, said: “We are delighted to welcome Deutschland back to Barrow. The Port of Barrow, with its close proximity to the stunning scenery and the attractions of the English Lake District, is well placed to make the most of the ever-increasing popularity of cruise vacations. This is good news for both the port and Cumbria’s tourism industry.”
