HRH THE PRINCESS ROYAL OFFICIALLY OPENS ABP’S HUMBER INTERNATIONAL TERMINAL 2

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has today (Wednesday, 31 May 2006) officially opened Humber International Terminal 2, Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Immingham’s brand-new, £59.5 million dedicated coal-handling facility.

The Princess Royal unveiled a plaque as part of a ceremony to commemorate the opening of the new terminal. During her visit, Her Royal Highness was taken on a guided tour of Humber International Terminal 2 by hosts Bo Lerenius, Group Chief Executive of ABP Holdings PLC, and Nick Palmer, ABP Port Director for Grimsby & Immingham. After the unveiling, Princess Anne took the opportunity to meet a number of guests attending the event, including port customers and local civic dignitaries from across the region.

Situated close to six of Britain’s most important coal-fired power stations, including Drax, the country’s largest power station, Humber International Terminal 2 was developed to meet the power-generation industry’s escalating demand for coal. To secure the financial success of the terminal project, ABP signed agreements with mining giant BHP Billiton, as well as power-station operators International Power, Scottish and Southern Energy, Drax Power and EDF Energy.

The berth, which took 23 months to build, extends Humber International Terminal’s total quay length by 220 m, giving a total of 520 m, and can accommodate vessels carrying more than 100,000 tonnes of cargo. Equipped with the latest and most modern dockside plant and fully automated landside operations, the terminal will be able to handle an estimated 9.5 million tonnes of coal each year, imported from countries including the US, South Africa, Indonesia, Poland and Russia. The majority of the product will be transported from the port to end-users by train.

Humber International Terminal 2 is the second phase of development of Humber International Terminal. Opened by The Princess Royal in October 2000, the first phase of the riverside terminal was built to receive deep-sea dry-bulk carriers. From the outset, it has been one of the port’s greatest success stories, handling approximately 25 million tonnes of cargo since becoming operational.

ABP Group Chief Executive Bo Lerenius explained the significance of the event:

“Today is a great day for the Port of Immingham, for ABP and the local region. Humber International Terminal 2 is a huge development that will greatly expand the port’s handling capabilities.

“Significantly, this year marks the centenary of the start of building work on Immingham Dock. Over the past 100 years, successive operators of the port have continually invested in new terminals and facilities, earnestly building for its future success. It is thanks to their vision, commitment and tenacity that the Port of Immingham has become the largest, and one of the most successful, ports in the country. I think today, we too have demonstrated our commitment to ensuring the future prosperity of the port.”

Grimsby & Immingham ABP Port Director Nick Palmer added:

“Humber International Terminal 2 is a major step forward in the development of the port. The new terminal will enable the port to handle substantial volumes of coal in an environmentally friendly manner in order to meet the ever-increasing demands of the power generators.”
