UKD EMPLOYEE SAILS THE ATLANTIC IN HOPE An employee of Cardiff-based UK Dredging (UKD), the dredging division of Associated British Ports (ABP), volunteered to sail across the Atlantic Ocean aboard m.v. Amazon Hope 2, in aid of the Vine Trust, a children’s charity. Craig Fitzgerald, Chief Engineer of the multicat dredging-support vessel UKD Sealion, was granted paid leave while he undertook the journey. Craig was chosen to assist the crew of Amazon Hope 2 because of his engineering background and his experience of working on small vessels. He played an important role onboard, monitoring the vessel’s engines and helping to keep watch during the three-week voyage from Bristol to New York and to other US East Coast ports, via the Azores and Bermuda. An ex-naval vessel, m.v. Amazon Hope 2 was recently converted into a ‘high-tech’ medical centre at BAE Systems’ Devonshire Dockyard in Barrow by the Vine Trust. The charity’s work provides shelter and medical care to homeless children in Peru.Jeff Neale, UKD’s General Manager, said: “The assistance that Craig has provided to the crew of Amazon Hope 2 has gone a long way to help those who are less fortunate than us. We are proud and glad to have been of help.”30th May 2006
