LOWESTOFT’S FESTIVITES CELEBRATE REGION’S MARITIME TRADITIONS Visitors will be able to have a drink on a traditional Dutch North Sea clipper and step aboard one of the world’s fastest motorboats at Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Lowestoft this weekend, 13 – 14 May 2006, as County Exhibitions Ltd, in conjunction with ABP, hosts the 2006 Lowestoft Boat Show. Featuring a number of vessels, activities and exhibitions, the Lowestoft Boat Show will be held from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday, and 9:30 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday, at the port’s Outer Harbour. Among the more colourful and interesting vessels on display will be a 225 hp Honda Formula 4-stroke racing boat, which will take visitors on a short ride they won’t easily forget, and HMS Quorn, a Royal Naval Hunt-class mine countermeasure vessel. The boat show will feature over 120 exhibitors and a number of events, including a canine-lifesaving demonstration. Free car-parking facilities will be available at Lowestoft Haven Marina, with water-taxis scheduled to ferry visitors to and from the boat show on a half-hourly basis. The Lowestoft Boat Show is the second major nautical spectacle in a month of maritime-themed events at the port. Towards the end of April, the Port of Lowestoft served as a stopover for the Race of the Classics flotilla. This year’s racing contest, one of Europe’s largest classic sailing races, saw 22 vessels, many dating back to the turn of the century, race from Rotterdam to Ijmuiden in Holland, via Ostend in Belgium, and Ramsgate. The month-long series of festivities will culminate in an Open Day at ABP’s Lowestoft Haven Marina. From 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturday, 27 May, the open day will mark the second anniversary of the marina’s opening. There will be nautical displays, including demonstrations by the Royal National Lifeboat Institute and Beneteau Yachts; pleasure-craft trials by the marina’s resident yacht brokerage – Fox’s Yacht Sales – and a raffle. Refreshments will be available from the Waterfront Inn, the marina’s popular riverside bar and restaurant, situated on the shores of Lake Lothing.Graham Kinnersley, Managing Director of the Lowestoft Boat Show, said: “The Lowestoft Boat Show would like to thank ABP for their continued support as the exhibition enters its third successful year.” Alastair MacFarlane, Port Manager for ABP East Anglia, said: “ABP is proud to support events such as the Lowestoft Boat Show, the Race of the Classics and Lowestoft Haven Marina’s Open Day. The town of Lowestoft has always had strong maritime traditions, and this month’s themed events do much to strengthen the local community’s sea-going and sea-trading ties to its past.”11th May 2006
