ABP SILLOTH’S RECORD-BREAKING CARGO
Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Silloth handled its largest ever consignment of cargo recently, when some 3,420 tonnes of fertiliser were discharged from m.v. Antari for Carrs Fertilisers. The previous record was 3,311 tonnes, which passed through the port in February 2003.

The port’s licensed stevedoring company, DA Harrison, discharged the cargo for Carrs in under 16 hours. The company achieved excellent productivity, as a result of both flexible working arrangements and its recent investment in a state-of-the-art Sumitomo grab crane.

Tonnage through Silloth has risen steadily in recent years, while the port and its customer base continue to satisfy the agricultural and manufacturing requirements of the Cumbrian economy. Volumes in 2005 reached their highest level since the 1990s, when the port was heavily utilised for cement exports to Northern Ireland and Eire.

Stan Denby, Managing Director, Carrs Fertilisers, said: “We are very pleased to have been the company to deliver Silloth’s largest ever cargo, especially as Antari’s arrival and discharge was fast and efficient. We hope to break this record again in the future.”

Nick Ridehalgh, ABP Port Manager, North-West Ports, added: “Breaking Silloth’s cargo record is a fantastic achievement. Although Silloth is one of our short-sea or “medium-sized” ports, this new record demonstrates that it can punch above its weight and that it’s more than capable of handling larger tonnages in a cost-effective and productive manner. The port plays an integral role in the regional economy and is a vital catalyst for local trade and commerce.”
