NEW PUBLIC QUAYSIDE OPENED AT ABP TEIGNMOUTH
A new quay and slipway facility at Polly Steps, besideAssociated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Teignmouth, has today (Friday, 7 October) been declared officially open. The facility, designed by the Teign Estuary Partnership in conjunction with local users, was built by ABP on behalf of Teignbridge District Council, and opened by Mrs Anne Greenwell, wife of the Port Manager. The presentation was attended by the Teignbridge Portfolio Holder for Economy & Tourism, Cllr Tom Archer, and representatives of the Teign Estuary Partnership and the local community.

The facility represents a considerable improvement to the public facilities available at Teignmouth, comprising 20 m of quay frontage with a guaranteed water depth of at least 1.5 m at all states of the tide. The quay surface has been constructed to the same high standard as the port’s new commercial quays and will allow mobile cranes to operate immediately adjacent to the quay wall. The new relocated slipway is twice the width, and has a shallower gradient, than the one it has replaced. In addition, underground ducts have been laid in the area, allowing for future upgrading of services.

The quay and slipway have been constructed as part of a ‘land-swap’ arrangement between Teignbridge District Council and ABP, and will be put to immediate use for the over-wintering of local yachts.

Colin Greenwell, ABP Port Manager, Plymouth & Teignmouth, said: “I am delighted that this long-planned scheme has now been brought to fruition. It stands as an excellent example of how ABP and the District Council have co-operated to provide a ‘win-win’ solution for all parties involved.”

He added: “I would also like to praise the facility’s design-and-build contractor, Dean & Dyball, for their flexibility, adaptability and the outstanding work that resulted in this facility being completed on time.”

Leader of Teignbridge District Council, Cllr Alan Connett, said: “This development highlights the benefits of partnership-working by creating new public facilities and supporting this strategically important commercial port. These new public facilities, in the shelter of Teignmouth Harbour, offer the ideal launch location, to enjoy the tranquillity of the Teign Estuary or to explore the beauty of this section of the South Devon coastline.”
