UK’S GREATEST NAVAL ADMIRAL TO VISIT PORT OF IPSWICH HMS Pickle – a replica of the naval schooner that carried news of Admiral Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar and of his untimely death back to Great Britain – will visit Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Ipswich from 22 to 27 September, as part of SeaBritain 2005, a year-long festival of events and exhibitions celebrating the UK’s maritime heritage. Amid much fanfare, the vessel, with performers onboard playing the parts of Admiral Nelson and his mistress, Lady Hamilton, will berth opposite Old Custom House at 3pm on Thursday, 22 September. A civic reception, hosted by the Mayor of Ipswich, Councillor Bill Wright, will take place at The Waterfront Conference Centre, Old Custom House, at 6:30pm, Thursday, 22 September, and will feature a re-enactment of the presentation of office of High Steward to Nelson, who was awarded the post in 1800. The Centre will see further events taking place this weekend commemorating Nelson’s close association with the town of Ipswich, including an exhibition hosted by the Ipswich Maritime Trust entitled ‘The Final Years of Square-rigged Sailing at Ipswich: End of an Era for International Trade’. Paul Jervis, Deputy Port Manager for ABP’s East Anglian Ports, said: “The town and Port of Ipswich enjoy a strong association with Admiral Nelson, and ABP, in partnership with Ipswich Borough Council, is proud to support this event, which serves to highlight the importance of the town’s distinguished nautical legacy.” Moored alongside the Centre, HMS Pickle will be open to the public from 23 to 26 September. 22nd September 2005
