£1 MILLION INVESTMENT TO FUEL PORT OF GOOLE’S BIOMASS TRADE

Associated British Ports (ABP) is to invest nearly £1 million in a new storage facility at its Port of Goole, following a new 10-year agreement with the operators of the port’s Caldaire Terminal.

The 3,200 sq m dry-bulks shed is being built on behalf of Caldaire Terminal’s customers Renewable Fuels Ltd to increase their capacity for handling biomass fuels used by the region’s power-generation industry. As one of the UK’s leading providers of sustainable biomass, it is estimated that Renewable Fuels Ltd will import some 130,000 tonnes of biomass through the port every year.

Backed by its parent organisation in Sweden, SBE BrikettEnergi AB - Europe’s largest manufacturers of refined-wood fuels – Renewable Fuels Ltd will import a range of fuels into Goole, including wood pellets and olive residue. The commissioning of the store at Goole will support the company’s continued commitment to supplying the UK’s power industry with quality biomass.

Matthew Kennerley, Port Director for Hull & Goole, welcomed the new development:

“We are very pleased to work with Caldaire Terminal and Renewable Fuels Ltd in building this new storage facility. The dry-bulks trade is extremely important to the Port of Goole and we are using this opportunity to expand our range of facilities for handling this business.

“The biomass trade is a rapidly growing business, and this development emphasises the advantages that the Port of Goole offers in terms of its proximity to the large markets of Yorkshire and the Midlands. This new shed will help us accommodate growth in this sector over the coming years.”

Bob Smith, Managing Director of Renewable Fuels Ltd, commented:

“The location of our store on the quay-side at Goole is critical and will enable an efficient discharge direct from ship to shed. Our products can then be transported via barge to the end-user which will represent real economic and environmental benefits to everyone in the supply chain. It is an exciting opportunity for us.”

Bill Carter, Managing Director of Caldaire Terminal, added:

“This is an exciting time for Caldaire as the new warehouse completes the development programme at our terminal. We are pleased to welcome Renewable Fuels Ltd on board and will ensure that we offer the high level of service and customer relations that we have with our other valued customers.”
