POWER FOR THE FUTURE AT ABP’S PORT OF BARROW
Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Barrow played an important role in the implementation of the UK’s first offshore substation, which has been successfully installed at the Barrow Offshore Windfarm (BOW). The substation transforms the power generated by the windfarm before it can be exported to the national grid and marks a crucial stage in the development of the 30-turbine facility, which is expected to provide power for approximately 65,000 homes.
The windfarm is a joint initiative between Centrica, the UK energy company, and Danish firm DONG (Dansk Olie og Naturgas). Facilities at the Port of Barrow’s Ramsden Dock were used when the substation was ‘fitted out’ by a 20-strong team from Agrilek, a multi-disciplined engineering company based in Barrow. Local development agency Furness Enterprise has also been instrumental in the project, providing business-support to help encourage the development.
Nick Ridehalgh, ABP Port Manager, North-West Ports, said: “The Port of Barrow is in a strategically advantageous position on the UK’s West Coast and makes a vital contribution to offshore and renewable-energy projects in the Irish Sea. Its extensive land bank and deep-water facilities make it an ideal location to support offshore renewable projects, and the success of this project stands as testament to this.”
John Freeland, BOW Deputy Project Manager, said: "ABP and the Port of Barrow provided both flexible and reliable facilities for the execution of this important part of the Barrow Offshore Windfarm project. The operation went extremely well."
