NEW ABP TERMINAL PROVIDES TRAINING OPPORTUNITY FOR COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT PROJECT Local apprentice bricklayers have been given the opportunity to receive paid on-the-job training thanks to a new partnership formed between Associated British Ports (ABP) and the Community Construction Training Company (CCTC). Six trainees from the CCTC Youthbuilding Programme are currently on work placement at the construction site of Humber International Terminal 2, ABP’s new £59.5 million development at its Port of Immingham. The bricklayers are working on construction of the substation that will house electrical equipment that will power Humber International Terminal 2’s operations. The trainees involved are 19 – 21 years of age and are at various stages of their apprenticeship. Each is using the opportunity to work on ABP’s new terminal to extend their practical-skills training to help them find long-term employment in the construction industry. CCTC is a Grimsby-based not-for-profit organisation that works closely with construction companies throughout the South Humber region to offer young unemployed people a training facility to become qualified, site-trained individuals, with the skills necessary to become a trade professional. This is the first ABP construction project to use CCTC’s students. Gordon Bulter, ABP Grimsby & Immingham’s Engineering Manager, and Project Manager of Humber International Terminal 2, welcomed the trainees. “ABP recognises the importance of investing in and developing the workforce of tomorrow, so we’re very pleased to be able to work with CCTC and offer these young people practical work experience on this important construction project.” CCTC’s Chief Executive, Monica Chatterton MBE, said: "CCTC welcomes this opportunity to work with ABP, as CCTC's aim is to provide well-trained employees to help fill the construction industry's skills gap in the Humber region. CCTC's Youthbuilding Programme delivers 'hands-on' practical training, and is becoming a widely recognised model for delivering good-quality training, and developing young peoples’ skills and employment opportunities." 17th August 2005
