PORT OF SWANSEA HANDLES RECORD FOREST PRODUCTS SHIPMENT

The single largest-ever consignment of forest products – 16,000 cu m of plywood – to be handled in South Wales was shipped through recently at Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Swansea.

Shipped from China and Malaysia aboard the Thai-registered m.v. Sumana Naree, the plywood is currently in storage at RKL Plywood UK’s (RKL) Forest Products Terminal, located on the port estate, before being distributed throughout the UK.

The shipment follows the signing of a 15-year agreement with RKL, who will be shipping similar volumes of plywood through the port on a regular basis. With increased volumes being handled at the port’s docks, RKL has forecast that their annual timber imports to the UK could be in excess of 250,000 cu m, the majority of which will be discharged at the Port of Swansea. RKL’s brand-new warehouse at Swansea, to be completed in October, will accommodate the rise in imports of timber and complement the company’s new timber operation in Brazil.

Chris Jones, National Sales Manager for RKL, said: “RKL is rapidly expanding in new directions, and the long-standing relationship we enjoy with ABP is central to realising the company’s future growth prospects.” …/2

Clive Thomas, Acting Port Director for ABP’s South Wales Ports, commented:

“ABP strives to maintain close business relationships with all its customers, and the agreement with RKL is a fine example of such a partnership. The construction of RKL’s new warehouse and the recent agreement to ship increased volumes of timber through Swansea mean that the port is ideally placed to grow its timber trade.”
