SILLOTH CELEBRATES “SEABRITAIN 2005”

Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Silloth will contribute to SeaBritain 2005, the nationwide celebration of Britain’s maritime heritage, when Captain Chris Puxley, ABP’s Harbour Master, presents an illustrated exhibition celebrating the history of the port. The exhibition will be held at the Golf Hotel, Silloth, on Saturday 30 July and Sunday 31 July, 10 am to 4 pm.

Amid remote coastal sand dunes, but connected to the new railway system, the Port of Silloth was built in 1859 as a trading facility for Carlisle’s flourishing industry. It has since seen many highs and lows, including the collapse of the dock entrance in 1879 and the building of the “New Dock” in 1885 and Carrs Flour Mill in 1887. The forthcoming exhibition is based around an extensive photographic archive and visitors will also be able to browse through a collection of charts, port plans, trading routes, dock and tugboat logbooks and maritime artefacts. There will also be an RNLI souvenir stall and refreshments will be available throughout the day from the hotel facilities.

Nick Ridehalgh, Port Manager, ABP’s North-West Ports, said: “As well as boasting a fascinating history, the Port of Silloth also makes an important contribution to the Cumbrian economy. Showing recent increases in agricultural imports and encouraging gains in forest products handled at the port, and supported by significant capital investment in equipment and infrastructure, we are confident that the port will continue to play a significant role in the region.”
