NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART TRAINING CENTRE OPENS IN ABP’s PORT OF HULL

Team Humber’s Ports & Logistics Training Centre at Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Hull, was officially opened today (Tuesday 19 July) by Jane Lyon, Director of Operations and Learning, Learning & Skills Council (LSC), and Steve Giblin, Group Safety Manager for ABP. Attendees at the ceremony included employees of ABP Connect, Team Humber partner Yorkshire Forward, and port customers DFDS Transport and P&O Ferries.

The education centre has been created to enhance the skills of port and logistics workers in the Humber region. The ‘open day’ saw employees familiarising themselves with computers and various software packages in the port’s IT Training Room, and finding out about the courses on offer. Funded by LSC, Team Humber was given the go-ahead to build the facilities in April 2004. Work on a second similar centre is being completed at Goole, and a third in Immingham will be opened by the end of summer.

Team Humber, the training association behind Humber Ports & Logistics Centre of Vocational Excellence, provides high-class training facilities at all levels for port and logistics employees. ABP has supported the centre by providing two state-of-the-art training rooms, as well as Internet connection and IT support.

Peter Wilkinson, Head of Safety at ABP Hull & Goole and Chairman of Team Humber, said:

“Team Humber is proud to be associated with the Centres of Logistics being established around Humber, of which the centre at the Port of Hull is the first of three to be up and running. The facility gives the ability to provide the relevant training at ports for improving the skills of existing employees and new entrants to the workforce.”

Jane Lyon, Director of Operations and Quality at LSC Humberside, commented:

“On behalf of the LSC, I am delighted to open this new ports-training centre today. This celebration marks the next development in the Ports & Logistics Centre of Vocational Excellence initiative, to develop high-class learning facilities and to help raise skills levels within the Humber ports.

“This new centre will provide access to training opportunities in or near the workplace, which will be of huge benefit to employers and their staff. It is a very exciting time for this sector and I would like to congratulate all those involved in today’s event.”
