ABP STAFF SHUN CALL FOR ACTION
Associated British Ports (ABP) was yesterday notified by the Transport & General Workers Union (T&G) that the outcome of the union’s industrial action ballot was to reject strike action. The ballot on industrial action short of a strike was also rejected.
ABP was pleased that the small proportion of its employees who were involved in the ballot, held between 6 and 27 June, returned this positive result. ABP will now implement the terms of its offer for the two years 2005 and 2006, and bring the prolonged pay negotiations, which have taken place over the past 15 months, to a satisfactory conclusion.
ABP owns and operates 21 ports in the UK – Hull, Goole, Grimsby, Immingham, Southampton, Cardiff, Barry, Newport, Port Talbot, Swansea, Ayr, Troon, Barrow, Fleetwood, Garston, Ipswich, King’s Lynn, Lowestoft, Plymouth, Silloth and Teignmouth.
ABP, which handles a quarter of the UK’s seaborne trade, employs approximately 2,500 people in the UK; of these, just under 300 are covered by ABP’s Voluntary National Recognition Agreement with the T&G.
