NODDY VISITS ABP’S PORT OF CARDIFF
Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Cardiff welcomed an unexpected visitor on Monday in the form of Noddy – Enid Blyton’s much-loved children’s character. Noddy was just one of hundreds of volunteers taking part in the Arthritis Research Campaign’s (arc) charity walk through the port on Monday, 13 June 2005.
Around 300 people turned up on the day to walk the three-mile route, with more than ₤5,000 in funds expected to be raised through sponsorship. Doctors and staff from the University Hospital of Wales’ children’s arthritis-research unit joined schoolchildren and community groups for the event.
The walk started from the Cardiff Bay Barrage at 7.00 pm, proceeded across Queen Alexandra Dock and Roath Basin, and finished outside the Wales Millennium Centre. Volunteers from ABP marshalled the walkers across ABP’s docks to ensure their safety.
The charity event was part of arc's ‘Noddy Appeal’, a national three-year campaign to raise more than £3 million for research into children’s arthritis. Fifteen charity walks, taking place in cities including Glasgow and London, are the focus of the campaign, which is planned to be held annually.
Fred Johnson, arc’s Appeals Manager for South Wales, commented:
“Children’s arthritis affects around 12,500 children across the UK. With ABP’s support, the Cardiff charity walk not only raised the profile of the disease, but also aided research into new methods of treatment. I would like to thank ABP for supporting arc’s Noddy Appeal”
