DUKE OF YORK VISITS LOWESTOFT HAVEN MARINA TO PROMOTE REGION’S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
His Royal Highness the Duke of York will be shown around Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Lowestoft Haven Marina today (Tuesday, 24 May) as part of a wider visit to Lowestoft to promote the region’s economic development and regeneration.
The marina has been identified by Waveney District Council as an excellent example of the successful development of brownfield sites. The council, along with the East of England Development Agency and other local authorities, have formed a consortium, which has been tasked with the redevelopment of riverside and derelict industrial sites at Lowestoft. Lake Lothing, where the marina is situated, is one of the sites being targeted, along with the Fish Dock and Ness Point.
John Fitzgerald, Port Director for ABP’s Short-Sea Ports, and Robert Smith, ABP East Anglia Port Manager, will give the Duke of York a guided tour of the marina. The tour itinerary will include visits to Fox’s Marine Stores, an onsite yacht sales company, and JPC Direct, a marine-repair company. There will also be a demonstration of the marina’s new boat hoist, capable of lifting yachts weighing up to 70 tonnes.
The Duke of York’s visit coincides with the first anniversary of Lowestoft Haven Marina’s official opening in May 2004. Over the course of the year, the marina, with 140 berths, has seen occupancy rates rise to 70 per cent. The marina, which features a restaurant and bar, has been awarded the Yacht Harbour Association’s prestigious four-star gold anchor rating.
Robert Smith said: “We are delighted that Prince Andrew has agreed to visit Lowestoft in a bid to promote the area’s economic development. We are also very pleased that the marina has been chosen to illustrate the potential for development in the region as this is indicative of ABP’s ability to remain at the forefront of developments in the ports industry.”
