£15 MILLION INVESTMENT AT ABP’S HUMBER INTERNATIONAL TERMINAL
Associated British Ports (ABP) is to make a further investment of £15 million in new plant and equipment for Humber International Terminal, Phase 2, which is currently under construction at ABP’s Port of Immingham. The £15 million investment is in addition to the current £44.5 million project spend at the terminal, which will see the creation of a major extension to Humber International Terminal, the Port of Immingham’s deep-water coal-handling facility.
ABP is to invest in a second coal stacker reclaimer and ancillary equipment for the terminal, following the signing of a new term agreement with Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE) to handle their coal imports, from summer 2006. The new plant will enable the terminal to handle the throughput the new business will bring, in addition to that which underpinned ABP’s original investment in the facility.
Bo Lerenius, ABP’s Group Chief Executive, commented:
“At £44.5 million, Humber International Terminal, Phase 2, already represented ABP’s largest-ever investment in a terminal development. Thanks to this new agreement with SSE, we are now able to invest further in this new facility up to a total amount of almost £60 million.”
Nick Palmer, ABP Port Director for the Port of Grimsby & Immingham, added: “This is a major project and one which is very exciting for us. In recent years, the demand for imported coal has increased considerably, and will continue to grow for some years to come. These new facilities will enable all cargo to be handled in an environmentally friendly manner with the use of automated materials-handling systems.”
Alistair Phillips-Davies, Energy Supply Director, SSE, commented:
“Going forward, we are pleased that this new agreement with ABP will enable SSE to handle our deliveries of coal efficiently and effectively.”
