ABP CONNECT’S NEW CRANE REACHES FINAL STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION

The final phase in the construction of ABP Connect – Immingham Terminal’s (‘Connect – Immingham’) new 40-tonne gantry crane has been reached following the successful installation of the crane’s boom. The crane took engineers 14 months to construct.

ABP Connect commissioned the Liebherr P98L gantry crane in 2004 as part of the expansion programme at the four-berth ro-ro and lo-lo terminal to increase substantially its container-handling capacity. The Liebherr P98L gantry crane is an advanced design and is the first of its kind to be delivered in the UK and is expected to become fully operation in mid-May.

Container-storage space at the terminal will increase by 25 per cent following the introduction of an advanced computerised container-location system, and the arrival of two new rubber-tyred gantry (RTGs) cranes, scheduled for this August. Installation of the gantry crane and the introduction of the RTGs will double the terminal’s throughput capacity.

Commenting on the latest development, ABP Connect’s Managing Director, Stephen Burgess, said:

“We have seen tremendous growth in containerised traffic at ABP Connect - Immingham Terminal as shippers and customers take advantage of our Northern location and the easy access to the motorway system. We have carried out this expansion programme to accommodate our existing and expected growth in container volumes. With the addition of this new gantry crane, we will be able to improve vessel turnarounds and have the ability to handle two ships simultaneously.”

He added: “In support of the second ship gantry, we have also started work in advance of taking delivery of two new RTG terminal cranes. These will greatly enhance our container-storage density and improve our terminal efficiencies. We expect the RTGs to become operational in August when our expansion programme will have been completed.”
