£1 MILLION SEA FREIGHT GRANT SUPPORTS SHORT-SEA INITIATIVE AT ABP TEIGNMOUTH

Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Teignmouth has received a major boost following the Department for Transport’s announcement that a £967,824 Freight Facilities Grant will be dedicated to new facilities at the port. The grant has been awarded to support both ABP and Civil & Marine Slag Cement’s (Civil & Marine) respective investments in new facilities for transporting cement by sea from Port Talbot to markets in Devon and Cornwall.

ABP is committed to seeking out opportunities that support the Government’s policy of promoting the sustainable distribution of goods, which is reflected in this project. As the material is to be transported by sea rather than by land, the new facilities will save a significant number of lorry journeys over the years.

John Fitzgerald, ABP Port Director, Short-Sea Ports, said: “We are delighted to receive Government support for this project, especially as it demonstrates how short-sea shipping can reduce the burden of traffic on the nation’s roads and benefit the environment in the long term. ABP has a network of 21 ports around the country and offers a unique opportunity to support such water based environmental initiatives. This project will link two of our facilities at Port Talbot and Teignmouth.”

Colin Greenwell, ABP Port Manager, Plymouth & Teignmouth, said: “This new contract is an important addition to the expanding portfolio of business at the port. We look forward to welcoming Civil & Marine and developing a long-term business relationship with them here in Teignmouth.”

David Jamieson, Transport Minister, said: “This is an excellent example of a scheme which underlines the Government’s policy to take freight off our roads where possible and use alternative methods of transport. I am very pleased to be able to announce that the Government will provide nearly half the money required to make the scheme a reality.”
