ABP CARDIFF SAILS TO UNI YACHTING TEAM’S RESCUE

Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Cardiff recently helped to send Cardiff University’s yachting team to this year’s student-yachting nationals, after agreeing to sponsor their 2005 campaign.

Cardiff University’s yachting club fielded a team of eight yachtsmen and women to compete in the nationwide event, held this year on the
Solent. The team managed a respectable 13th place out of a total field of 28 teams, with a best-race result of fourth. Being the highest-placed Welsh team in the field also meant that they automatically qualified for entry into the world championships, which is being staged at the end of the year in France.

ABP agreed to make a donation to ensure that the team could meet the competition’s entrance fees and damage deposit. Nick Simmons, Cardiff University’s yachting-team captain, thanked ABP for its contribution towards the cost of entry.

“We rely entirely upon sponsorship and donations to meet our costs. Without donations made by companies, such as ABP, we would not be able to compete in the student-yachting nationals and so would not have a chance of trying to qualify for the world championships. I would just like to thank ABP for helping to give us that chance this year,” said Nick.

John Copping, Port Director for ABP’s South Wales Ports, which includes the Port of Cardiff, said:

“As a keen sailor myself, I was very pleased to be able to help send Cardiff University’s yachting team to this year’s nationals.I would like to congratulate the team on their excellent performance and wish them all the best in the world championships.”
