CANARY SEASON UNDERWAY WITH FIRST SHIPMENT

The first shipment of this season’s Canary Islands tomatoes, which are destined for supermarket shelves around the country, arrived at Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Southampton recently.

The Chikuma Reefer discharged over 370 pallets of cargo at the dedicated Canary Islands Fruit Terminal in the port’s Western Docks, ready for the start of the 2004/2005 season.

Grown in glorious sunshine, the tomatoes are shipped to Southampton, which is the sole UK port for all Canary Islands’ fresh produce imports. The shipments take place between October and May.

Around 80,000 tonnes of palletised Canary Islands fresh produce are handled at the port each year, the majority of which consists of tomatoes.Smaller volumes of peppers, avocados and cucumbers are also handled during the season.

Andrew Kent, ABP Port Director, Southampton, said:

“Southampton has first-class facilities that have been precisely tailored to meet the very exacting standards required to handle fresh produce.”
